You can use Direct or Selection modes when assigning attributes to model elements.

Direct.
It is a default mode if you have not selected elements.
Use this mode to assign an attribute to elements that you select directly in the drawing area. Click to select an element. The attribute is assigned instantly.

Selection.
It is a default mode if you selected elements in the Object Inspector or in the drawing area.
Use this mode to assign an attribute to a selection of elements. If your selection includes different elements, the attribute is assigned where applicable. For example, sections are assigned only to linear elements in your selection.
You can change the assignment mode from Direct to Selection and from Selection to Direct.
