Associate a CAD file to an existing Upchain item

If you already have an engineering BOM structure built out in Upchain, you can associate your native CAD files to those items, assuming those items do not yet have CAD associated with them.

If you know where the item is located within a BOM in Upchain

  1. Make sure you have the CAD file you want to associate with an item open in your CAD system.

  2. Select the desired Upchain project from the context selector.

  3. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.

  4. Select Project BOM from the drop-down.

  5. Right-click the item in the Project BOM and select Attach active CAD file.

The CAD Check in window opens. If the CAD file you are associating with an item contains child components, you may use the CAD Check in window to create items for them now. Otherwise, all child components will be registered as phantom by default.

  6. Click OK.

The CAD file is now associated with the item in Upchain and the item is locked or checked out to you (green check out lock). Refresh the cBOM view to see this.

You may now make changes to the design or the item attributes before saving or checking the item in. If you do not want to continue working on the item, you may cancel the check out.

If you don't know where the item is located in Upchain

  1. Make sure you have the CAD file you want to associate with an item open in your CAD system.

  2. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.

  3. Select cBOM from the drop-down, if it’s not already selected.

  4. Click the Refresh icon (refresh_icon.png).

  5. Right-click the item in the cBOM and select Find item from the drop-down.

    The Search window opens.

  6. Search for the Upchain BOM item using any of the available attributes. For instance, if you know the Name or Item Number of the item, you can search for it here.

    • Enter the corresponding information and click Search or press Enter.
    • The Search window is populated with search results.
  7. Select the Upchain item in the search results to view its details on the right side.

  8. Once you've selected the desired item, click Select.

The CAD Check in window opens. If the CAD file you are associating with an item contains child components, you may use the CAD Check in window to create items for them now. Otherwise, all child components will be registered as phantom by default.

  9. Click OK.

The CAD file is now associated with the item in Upchain and the item is locked or checked out to you (green check out lock). Refresh the cBOM view to see this.

You may now make changes to the design or the item attributes before saving or checking the item in. If you do not want to continue working on the item, you may cancel the check out.
