Colors the elements of an object based on the stack information, a map, soft selection or vertex colors. Data channel output can be randomized based on hue, luminance, and saturation.

- Input menu
- Selects where data is collected from: Vertex Colors, Map, Soft Selection, or From Stack.
Vertex Color Controls group
- Channel
- Sets the vertex color channel. Displays only when Vertex Colors is selected as the input.
Map Controls group
- Map Channel
- Sets the map channel. Displays only when Map is selected as the input.
- Map button

Click to choose a map from the Material/Map browser. Displays only when Map is selected as the input.
You can also drag and drop a map from a Material Editor sample slot. If the Slate Material Editor is open, you can drag from a map node's output socket, then drop onto this button. You can also drag and drop from a map button in the Material Editor or anywhere else in the 3ds Max interface. When you drop a map , a dialog asks if you want the map to be a copy (independent) or an instance of the source map.
- Use Element Center
- Samples the color at the center of the given element, turning averaging off.
- Color By menu
- Selects coloring by Face or Element.
- Apply Colors to Luminance toggle
- When enabled, applies colors as a gradient to the luminance value. Click the color swatches to assign the colors.
Output group
- Output VC
- Selects a map channel for outputting the vertex color.
- Randomize
- Randomizes based on hue, luminance or saturation. Use the Seed field to change the pattern.
