Viewport Configuration

The Viewport Configuration dialog provides controls for setting viewport-control options.

The Viewport Configuration dialog

  • Right-click the Field-of-View or the Zoom Region
  • Click or right-click the General viewport label (“[ + ]”) . > General Viewport Label Menu > Configure Viewports > Viewport Configuration dialog
  • With No text active, click or right-click the Shading viewport label ("Realistic" or "Wireframe" by default). > Shading Viewport Label Menu: Nitrous Viewports > Configure > Viewport Configuration dialog
  • Default menu: Views menu > Viewport Configuration
  • Alt menu: Scene menu > Configure Views > Viewport Configuration

All the configuration options are saved with the MAX scene file. To configure default startup settings for your file, save the scene (empty or not) as maxstart.max in the default Scene folder. If this file exists when you start or reset 3ds Max, the program uses it to determine the viewport configuration and settings.

  • Display Performance Panel (Nitrous Driver)
    For Nitrous viewports, you adjust the progressive display and adaptive degradation methods on the Display Performance panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog.
  • Viewport Layouts
    Viewport Layouts gives you a special tab bar for switching quickly among any number of different viewport layouts. For example, you might have a four-viewport layout, zoomed out for an overall view of your scene from different angles simultaneously, plus several different full-screen closeup views of different parts of the scene. The ability to activate any of these with a single click can speed your workflow tremendously. The layouts are saved with the scene so you can return to your custom viewports setup at any time.
  • Rendering Method Panel (Legacy Drivers)
    For legacy display drivers (Direct3D and OpenGL), the Rendering Method panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog sets the rendering method for either the current viewport or all viewports.
  • Background Panel
    Provides options for viewport background display.
  • Layout Panel
    You specify the division method of viewports, and assign specific types of views to each viewport on the Layout panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog.
  • Safe Frames Panel
    Use the Safe Frames panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog to toggle the status of the video safe frames for the current viewport and adjust its parameters.
  • Adaptive Degradation Panel (Legacy Drivers)
    For legacy viewports (Direct3D and OpenGL), you adjust the adaptive viewport redraw methods on the Adaptive Degradation panel.
  • Regions Panel
    On the Regions panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog, you specify default selection rectangle sizes for the Blowup Region and Sub Region rendering options.
  • Statistics Panel
    Viewports can display statistis that show the number of vertices, polygons, and so on. Use the Statistics panel to customize that display.
  • Lighting and Shadows Panel (Legacy Drivers)
    For legacy display drivers (Direct3D and OpenGL), the Lighting And Shadows tab sets preferences for lighting and shadow display in shaded viewports. For Nitrous display viewports, lighting and shadow controls appear in the Viewport Label menus.
  • ViewCube Panel
    These controls affect interaction with the ViewCube feature. Any changes in settings persist between sessions.
  • SteeringWheels Panel
    These controls affect interaction with the SteeringWheels feature. Any changes in settings persist between sessions.
