USD for 3ds Max 0.2 Release Notes

USD for Autodesk 3ds Max version 0.2 is a feature release with your installation of 3ds Max 2023. For important legal information about this version, please refer to the following: About USD for 3ds Max.

Note:

USD for Autodesk 3ds Max is supported by systems capable of running 3ds Max 2022 and higher. USD for Autodesk 3ds Max is a standalone product that must be downloaded and installed separately of 3ds Max. For installation instructions, visit Install USD for 3ds Max.

What's Supported

3ds Max's USD import and export process lets artists use 3ds Max to author or edit USD data. Artists can use 3ds Max's tools and workflows to create and export models for their USD pipeline and re-import it to make further edits, if necessary. To learn more, see USD Importer and USD Exporter.

This workflow enables the following:

  • Advanced users with existing pipelines to have the ability to incorporate 3ds Max into an automated USD pipeline via Python scripting. For more information, see the MaxScript USD Documentation.
  • Beginner users getting started with USD to participate in USD pipelines via the USD Importer and USD Exporter Interface.

Latest Features

The following features are available with USD for 3ds Max 0.2 (See USD Exporter to learn more):

  • Now supports exporting animation data such as node transform animations and vertex animation cache.
  • Added basic support for exporting splines.
  • Enhanced support for exporting and importing Photometric Lights.
  • Enhanced support for exporting and importing cameras.
  • Improved performance for exporting mesh and scene data.
  • Added export option to include/exclude hidden nodes.
  • Added options to control export of map channel data from meshes.
  • USDView now available with required dependencies.
  • New export option to control polygon triangulation.
  • Mesh conversion function available in MAXScript to extract mesh data from a USD Prim.
Known Issues and Limitations
PointInstancer is currently unsupported.
Animation import is unsupported.
Texture graphs are not supported, only direct bitmap inputs are supported.
Photometric Spot and Web (IES) light distribution are not supported in this release.
