General Materials

The topics in this section describe materials found in the Material Editor's Material/Map Browser under the General category.

  • Physical Material
    The Physical Material uses a shading model including most reasonable shading effects for real world materials, while maintaining a balance of being easy to use with a logical layout.
  • Compound Materials
    Compound materials combine two or more sub-materials for a variegated look, especially when used with maps.
  • Matte/Shadow Material
    The Matte/Shadow material allows you to make whole objects (or any subsets of faces) into matte objects that reveal the current background color or Environment map.
  • Ink 'n Paint Material
    The Ink 'n Paint material creates cartoon effects. Rather than the three-dimensional, realistic effect most other materials provide, Ink 'n Paint provides flat shading with “inked” borders.
  • Morpher Material
    The Morpher material works hand-in-hand with the Morpher modifier. You can use it to make the cheeks of a character blush, or to wrinkle a character's forehead when the eyebrows are raised. With the Morpher modifier's channel spinners, you can blend materials the same way you morph the geometry.
  • PBR Materials
    Physically-based rendering (PBR) is a shading method use to accurately represent the interaction of light with surfaces.
  • Shell Material for Texture Baking
    The Shell material is for use with texture baking.
  • XRef Material
    The XRef material lets you use a material applied to an object in another scene file.
  • glTF Material
    The new glTF Material uses a shading model that gives an accurate representation of what your asset will look like once published to glTF.
