OpenPBR Material - Arnold for 3ds Max

Further Reading
See OpenPBR Surface in the Arnold User Guide for the full shader documentation.

Info: The OpenPBR Material is available in 3ds Max 2025.3 and later versions (earlier versions of 3ds Max feature OpenPBR Surface).

The OpenPBR Material shader is a physically-based shader capable of producing many types of materials. Due to a large number of controls, it is split up into several groups:

  • Base
  • Specular
  • Transmission
  • Subsurface
  • Coat
  • Fuzz
  • Emission
  • Thin Film
  • Geometry
  • AOVs (ID)
  • Advanced
Note:

You will need to render at least once for the extra Arnold Parameters to appear in the OpenPBR Material rollouts.

Further information about physically based rendering in Arnold can be found here.

Info: The OpenPBR Material shader supports ID AOVs. These are useful for creating mattes for compositing or for connecting arbitrary channels (e.g. noise shaders).
