Crash when opening a certain drawing in AutoCAD Products

Technical Support

Issue:

Users reported that when opening some drawings in AutoCAD products, the program freezes and may crash with specific drawing files only. The AutoCAD Products include AutoCAD Toolsets (ACA, MEP...) and Civil 3D. The crash might also occur silently with no error message or a CER(customer error report) might appear.

Causes:

  • The drawing or XREF in the drawing is corrupt.
  • Damaged or invalid objects.
  • Missing video card updates

Solution:

When the file can be recovered:

  1. Try to recover the file using RECOVER or RECOVERALL if the dwg contains XREFs.
  2. If recovery worked without crashing, then it is possible to restore at least some part of the drawing.
  3. See How to repair corrupt AutoCAD files for more ways to repair the file.

Note: If RECOVERALL causes a crash, the problem may be one or more XREFs that will need to be repaired separately.

When the file cannot be recovered:

  1. This means that the drawing information is damaged and cannot be restored.
  2. Try to restore the content from existing backups of the file.

When the file (that contains references) can be opened normally by other users:

  1. Reset AutoCAD to default
  2. Inside AutoCAD open a new file and change these system variables to zero(0)
    1. XREFNOTIFY (System Variable)=0
    2. TRAYNOTIFY (System Variable)=0

When the DWT or DWG file can be opened normally by older versions but not by AutoCAD 2025

  1. On the command line set GFXDX12 to 0 (zero) and restart AutoCAD 2025
  2. Update your graphics board driver to the latest version. See also: How to update to the latest certified video driver for Autodesk software
