About Locking the Objects on a Layer

Product Documentation
Beginner

You can prevent objects on specified layers from being selected and modified by locking those layers.

When a layer is locked, none of the objects on that layer can be modified until you unlock the layer. Locking layers reduces the possibility of modifying objects accidentally.

Objects on locked layers appear faded and a small lock icon is displayed when you hover over an object on a locked layer. You can set a fade level to locked layers. This serves two purposes:

  • You can easily see what objects are on locked layers.
  • You can reduce the visual complexity of a drawing but still maintain visual reference and object snapping capabilities to those objects.

Some operations are still possible when a layer is locked. For example, you can still

  • Make a locked layer current
  • Add objects to a locked layer
  • Use inquiry commands such as LIST
  • Use object snaps to snap to objects on locked layers
Note

Grips are not displayed on objects that are on locked layers.

The LAYLOCKFADECTL system variable controls the fading applied to locked layers.

When you lock a layer that contains transparent objects, the visibility of those objects is further reduced by the specified locked layer fading value.

Locked layers that are faded are plotted normally.
