FAQ: Where are Configuration Settings Stored?

Most of the configuration settings are in a template (.dwt) file. Template files require additional support files to implement the configuration settings at draw time

In the Options dialog box and other dialog boxes that control the configuration, the icon indicates settings stored in templates.

Support files supplement the settings in template files, such as drawing files that contain custom parts lists, title borders, and so on. Starting with AutoCAD Mechanical 2009, the default location of some of these files have changed to facilitate the following:

  • Limited user rights on a workstation. You can run AutoCAD Mechanical toolset as a limited user. This means that you no longer need power user or Administrator permissions to run AutoCAD Mechanical toolset.
  • Roaming profiles. Roaming profiles enable you to log on to any computer within a network and retain your user settings. Some files, such as your personal settings and documents, follow you from computer to computer, while other files, such as templates, reside only on your system.

See the links below for details of file locations.
