About Configuring BOMs Balloons and Parts Lists (AutoCAD Mechanical Toolset)

The BOM is a table that contains information about the parts and assemblies within a drawing. The program uses this information to generate parts lists and balloons.

When you select a drafting standard, the default settings for parts lists and balloons change to match that standard. The BOM setting change to support the change in parts list and balloon settings. You can customize these settings to suit your drafting requirements.

Configuring the BOM, parts lists, and balloons are interlinked operations. Customize the component properties, including:

  • how properties are displayed in the BOM.
  • the parts list layout
  • balloons
  • what information the program captures from the parts and assemblies in the drawing, to be displayed in the BOM

We recommend customizing BOM Configuration before you start drawing. If you change the BOM configuration after you create a BOM, the BOM can include inconsistent data.
