You can promote a data reference to an independent object that can be edited; after promotion it is no longer updated from its original source object.

There are two data reference types used in Autodesk Civil 3D: data shortcuts and Vault references .

Why do you need to promote them? I would feel better using Data Reference and Promote .

The data shortcut is used only for the creation of data references .

Just be aware that when you promote a dref it will no longer update if the reference data is changed.

If you open your toolspace and navigate to pipe networks, this icon will show if it is a data shortcut reference .   Actually, you need to open source and not promote .

I came back into my construction dwg and renamed the promoted profile to "A-1" then re- referenced the "A" profile.

It will reflect to all dref using that alignment so no need to promote just do it in the source alignment drawing.

If your old Alignment relies on a Data Shortcut, break this dependency by promoting the Alignment. 3. Make sure to set the correct working folder and the data shortcuts project (where your new Alignment DREF resides).
