User Profile

Multiple components within Flame, Flame Assist, and Flare can be configured to enhance their efficiency. The state of certain components is saved on a user basis, allowing different users on the same workstation to operate the application in diverse ways.

User-based settings are stored with the OS user files at the following locations:

  • Linux: /home/<user name>/flame/
  • macOS: /Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/flame/

From the 2025 version onwards, a single set of files is used for all versions of the applications.

Using Settings on Different Workstations

Since user-based settings are linked to the OS user files, they automatically load when a user logs into any workstation, provided the user's home directory resides in a centralised location on the facility network.

The DL_USER_HOME environment variable allows the application to read user files from a location other than the default one. An existing path with the right read-write permissions must be specified as the argument. The next time the application is launched a /flame directory will be created inside the defined path.

Two scenarios that make this variable is particularly useful:

  • A single user wants to use the same application user files on multiple workstations, but uses different OS or does not share his home folder. In this case, the application user files are placed in a folder seen by all the workstations on a shared drive and the variable is set on the workstations to point to this folder.
  • Two users share the same OS credentials to log in a workstation but want to use different application user files. In this case, the environment variable must be used to point to the User A or User B application user files after each login.
Important: Do not set this environment variable with the Setup application or /opt/Autodesk/cfg/env.cfg. If you do, all users logging onto the same workstation will share the same application user files.

Using the User and User Nickname Tokens

Some text fields provide the option to use tokens as building blocks to automatically build a text string. In some cases, you have access to the <user> and <user nickname> tokens. These tokens are configured in:

  • The User Tokens tab of the User Preferences.
  • The User tab of the Setup Application.

Exporting and Importing User Settings

To use user-based settings on a workstation situated outside of your network, you need to export your settings using the Export… function found in the User tab of the Setup application. This process generates a .zip file containing all the files associated with the user profile.

Once you have copied the .zip file to the other workstation, you use the Import function of the Setup application to import the user settings. You can import all the settings, or just the Keyboard Shortcuts, Preferences, or Presets.

Custom Tangent Panels mapping are not saved in the user OS files so they must be manually copied from one workstation to another.

Even if you do not need to export your user settings to a different workstation, exporting your settings and then safekeeping the .zip file is a simple yet effective backup, and provides a safeguard against losing your user settings should a problem arise.

Resetting the User Settings

User settings can be reset from the User tab of the Setup application.

The Reset function resets all the settings, or you can choose to reset only the Keyboard Shortcuts, the Preferences, or the Presets.

Preferences

Preferences can be saved on a User, Project, Application Version, or System basis.

For more information about the user preferences, see User Preferences.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Flame, Flame Assist, and Flare come with four keyboard shortcuts profiles that can be customized on a user basis. The factory presets for these keyboard shortcuts are located in /opt/Autodesk/presets/<application version>/shortcuts. Customized keyboard shortcuts are saved in /shortcuts in the OS files.

For more information about customizing keyboard shortcuts, see Changing Keyboard Shortcuts.
