About Cache and Renders

The Cache and Renders options set the formats used by the application to write media to the media cache, for example, when:

  • Caching media. On demand (context menu Media) or on import (MediaHub General Clip Options).
  • Rendering a Timeline FX, a clip using a Tools module, or when using a Render node in Batch or Batch FX.
  • Creating virtual media such as coloured frames.
  • Creating proxies. On demand (context menu Media) or on import (MediaHub General Clip Options).

Use Cache and Renders to set your storage preferences

  • Select one of the presets to set Integer (8-bit, 10-bit, or 12-bit) and Floating Point (16-bit or 32-bit) cache formats or select the desired formats from the format drop-down.

  • Compressed formats (DNx or Apple ProRes) have a smaller storage and bandwidth footprint, with lower quality options generating lower quality cache and renders.

  • All options use either OpenEXR (with lossless PIZ compression) or RAW for 16-bit and 32-bit floating-point bit depths.

If you plan on using Linked Media export, consider using a cache format with DPX or OpenEXR.

    RAW is an RGB format.

Tip: The Export window displays an asterisk next to the compression of file sequence export whose format matches the current Cache and Renders. This simplifies the use of Link Media when exporting.

Format Details

Format Details displays the formats used to store cache and renders for each bit depth.

DNxHD supports resolution up to HD (1920x1080); anything higher is encoded in DNxHR.

The tables below show the various cache and render formats and the size of a 1920x1080 noise frame clip.
