To set the roadside grading method

You can change the grading method and grading parameters for a component road from the selected road's Stack. Changes display immediately after an auto-refresh.

When you select a road, the grading parameters you set apply to the grading zones on both sides of the road (right side and left side).

If you choose the Fixed Slope grading method, you can then select each grading zone (right side or left side) separately and set its grading parameters independently from values set for the grading zone on the other side of the road.

  • Fixed Slope method grades the slope to the default or current grading limit. Slopes that do not reach extant ground before reaching the limit are tied-in with a near-vertical surface. You can change the grading limit to lower or raise the vertical surface or smooth out the grading to the extant ground level.
  • Fixed Width method grades the slope over a fixed distance (the grading limit based initially on the road style), with a smooth tie-in to extant ground. So, a low grading limit used for terrain with a large rise or fall results in a steep grade. You can extend the grading limit to reduce the magnitude of the slope.

Cut and Fill Slope Values

A Slope Cut or Fill value of 5:1 means a 5-unit run for each 1-unit rise or fall. This setting creates a "gentle", 20% slope. For a steeper slope, set the Cut or Fill value, for example, to 3:1, which creates a 3-unit run for each 1-unit rise or fall.

Roadside Grading for Component Roads

  1. Select the road to display its Stack Panel.
  2. Choose the Grading Method: Fixed Slope or Fixed Width, or accept the current setting.
  3. Use Fixed Slope if you want to set different grading parameter values for the grading zone on each side of the road.
  4. Adjust the Grading Limit, as desired.
    1. To set grading values that apply uniformly to both grading zones: With the whole road selected, using either grading method, set the Cut Slope or Fill Slope value, or accept the current value.
    2. To set grading values that apply only to the single-selected grading zone on one side of the road (Fixed Slope method only): Select one of the grading zones (right side or left side) and set the Cut Slope or Fill Slope value for that side. Select the other side's grading zone and set its values.
    3. To override single-side grading values: Exit (de-select) the selection of the single grading zone. Re-select the whole road and set parameters at that level, which will now apply to both sides.
  5. Optionally, change the material display style for the grading zones. If using the Fixed Slope method, you can change the material style for each grading zone (right side or left side) independently of the other.
