Gray Cast Iron in Plain Bearings

Gray cast iron properties are different from other bearing materials properties. Consider the following conditions when using them:

  • Sum of sliding pair surface textures should be up to 0.6 microns.
  • The bearing length should not be greater than its inner diameter.
  • Smooth running without impact loading, for sliding speed ranges from 0.5 to 5 m/sec.
  • Ensure uninterrupted lubrication and lubricant filtration.

Bushings from gray cast iron are considerably sensitive to edge loading, which is determined by the hardness of HB 190 - 240. When using this material, hardened steels with a sufficiently higher hardness than gray cast iron are used for bearing shafts. The maximum loading for pressure circulation lubrication system is given at 8 MPa for 1 m/sec circumferential speed. Maximum loading up to 1.5 MPa is given for a speed of 5 m/sec.
