GeoPlan features

The GeoPlan window is displayed when a network is opened. It displays a geographical representation of the network and allows the display of additional layers of map information. Using this view, it is possible to inspect any part of the network, edit any of its objects or add new objects to the network.

Some of the GeoPlan functionality is provided by a third party GIS product. IWLive Pro Operator Client currently supports:

  • MapXtreme from PBBI.
  • ArcObjects and ArcEngine.from ESRI.

These allow the display of background maps and additional layers in PBBI or ESRI format. You should purchase and use the appropriate IWLive Pro Operator Client version depending on your mapping needs. To change the GIS product used by IWLive Pro Operator Client, see the Map Control topic.

The topics in this section contain information on moving around the GeoPlan Window, altering the display of the network and selecting objects.

Moving around the GeoPlan

You can move around the GeoPlan Window using the panning tools or by using the GeoPlan Locator Map. The panning tools allow you to move by small amount at a time within the area currently visible. The GeoPlan Locator Map allows you to move to any location in your model quickly.

You can also centre the GeoPlan Window on one or more objects by using the Find functions. See below.

Automatic Panning

You can switch on an option that allows you to automatically pan the GeoPlan view. To switch this option on or off:

  1. Choose Options from the Tools menu. This displays the Options dialog.
  2. Switch to the GeoPlan Page.
  3. Check or un-check the Enable Auto-Panning check box

With the option enabled:

  • large arrows appear when you move the cursor close to the edges and corners of the GeoPlan.
  • click with the left mouse button to scroll the view in the direction indicated.
  • click and hold down the left mouse button to scroll repeatedly in the direction indicated.

GeoPlan with Automatic Panning Cursor visible on the right

This option may be quite slow if you have a large amount of data to redraw on the GeoPlan Window. You may want to use one of the other methods if you have a large network visible, or if you are using additional layers containing complex data.

Manual Panning Tool

Click the Gifs/iwpan.gif button on the Tools Toolbar or press F8 to turn on panning mode. Click and then hold the left mouse button down. Drag the pointer to another part of the GeoPlan and release the mouse button.

Panning can also be carried out by holding down the mouse scroll wheel while dragging the pointer on the GeoPlan.

Centering the view on Selected Objects

You can also use the find tools, or select one or more objects, and then centre the view on those objects. See:

Zooming on the GeoPlan Window

There are a number of tools available that allow you to zoom and pan around the GeoPlan Window. These tools are described below.

The current GeoPlan zoom level is displayed on the Status Bar.

Zooming In

Click the Gifs/00000090.gif button on the Tools Toolbar or press F9 to activate Zoom In mode. You can then:

  • Click once on the GeoPlan to zoom in by a fixed amount.
  • Click and then hold the left mouse button down; drag the mouse to create a box around the area you wish to magnify.

Select Zoom Infrom the popup menu to zoom in by a fixed amount (50%).

Quick Zoom

Pressing the SHIFT key activates the QuickZoom feature. This allows you to zoom in on the network without changing the currently selected tool. QuickZoom remains in effect until you release the SHIFT key.

Wheel Mouse Users

The mouse scroll wheel can be used to change zoom level on the GeoPlan instead of using the Gifs/00000090.gif and Gifs/iwzmout.gif tools.

Zooming Out

Click the Gifs/iwzmout.gif button on the Tools Toolbar or press F10 to activate Zoom Out mode. Click once on the GeoPlan view to zoom out by a fixed amount.

Select Zoom Outfrom the popup menu to zoom out by a fixed amount (50%).

The mouse scroll wheel can also be used to change zoom level on the GeoPlan instead of using the Gifs/00000090.gif and Gifs/iwzmout.gif tools.

GeoPlan Magnifier

The GeoPlan magnifier can be used to get an expanded view of a small area underneath the cursor. If a magnifier is currently open, using the mouse scroll wheel will change the zoom within the magnifier window.

See GeoPlan Magnifier Window for more details.

GeoPlan Magnifier Window

The Magnifier window allows a small area of the GeoPlan Window to be seen in much greater detail. Moving the magnifier around the GeoPlan displays a small area around the current cursor position at a much higher zoom level. Once the magnifier has been positioned, several standard GeoPlan operations can be carried out within the magnified area.

GeoPlan Magnifier

Switching on the Magnifier

To switch on the magnifier, simply hold down the Ctrland SHIFT keys with the mouse cursor over the area of interest on the GeoPlan Window.

Moving an Existing Magnifier

To move an existing magnifier, position the mouse cursor close to the centre of the magnifier window, hold down the Ctrland SHIFT keys and move the cursor to the required location. A new magnifier is created at the location of the cursor as it is moved. It is best to move the window slowly to allow detail to redraw correctly.

Release the Ctrl and SHIFTkeys when the magnifier is positioned correctly.

Magnifier Operations

A number of simple single click operations are available within the magnifier window as well as elsewhere on the GeoPlan Window. They are:

  • SelectionTool .
  • Information Tool .
  • Object Graphing Tool . (only valid for simulations)

Removing an Existing Magnifier

To remove an existing magnifier window, simply click anywhere in the GeoPlan Window outside the magnifier.

Changing the Zoom Level

The zoom level of the magnifier can be changed by using the -and + keys or by rotating the scroll wheel on the mouse.

GeoPlan Locator Map

The GeoPlan Locator Map allows you to pinpoint your exact location within a network. This can sometimes be difficult when you are zoomed in on a specific area. You can also use the Locator Map to pan around the network, making it easy to move around the whole network quickly.

The GeoPlan Locator Map displays a simple schematic of the entire network, with a highlighted box displaying the current location of the GeoPlan Window in relation to the network as a whole.

The locator map can be turned on and off using the Show locator window option on the Geoplan tab, which is accessed from the Tools | Optionsmenu. The Geoplan will need to be closed and re-opened for the change to be implemented.

The locator map must stay within the GeoPlan window, but it can be resized and positioned within that window in the same way as you would move or resize any other window.

Panning

A powerful feature of the GeoPlan Locator Map is the ability to move the area displayed by the main GeoPlan view quickly and easily anywhere in the network.

If you move the cursor over the highlighted box in the locator map, the cursor changes to a .

With this cursor showing, click and hold the left mouse button down. You can now drag the highlighted box anywhere within the network. Simply release the mouse button to pan the main GeoPlan Window to this location.

Find and Zoom Using XY Coordinates

You can find any point in your model by entering their XY coordinates and, if necessary, change the zoom level to zoom in or out centred on that point.

To find a point from its coordinates

  1. Click the Find XY button on the Operations Toolbar. This displays the Go To XY Coordinates dialog.
  2. Type in the coordinates you want to find. The dialog gives you some help by showing the maximum and minimum coordinates in the network
  3. Choose a zoom level. The value given is the shortest distance across the GeoPlan Window. This is likely to be the top to bottom distance, but may vary depending on the window shape and the aspect ratio.
  4. Click OK to zoom in or out to the chosen level, centred on the chosen coordinates.

GeoPlan geolocation using Online Maps

You can geolocate a specific GeoPlan object or location using common online maps.

Please note that depending on the map control used, you may need to set an online map projection system prior to following the steps mentioned below:

  1. Click the GeoPlan at the point of interest or select an object.
  2. Right-click and select view Online from the context menu.
  3. Then select the desired online mapping service.
  4. The selected web map software will open in the default web browser, with the GPS coordinates that have been clicked on the GeoPlan highlighted on the map.

See Integration with Web Mapping Software for more details.
