New modeling updates include improvements to Smart Extrude in Maya.

Smart Extrude Updates in Maya
Smart Extrude is a powerful extrude functionality for Maya, which lets you interactively extrude faces in the viewport and eliminates the need to manually repair double faces and unwelded results that occur during a traditional Extrude operation. With Smart Extrude, faces that are fully, partially cut-through or overlapped by the operation results are interactively rebuilt and stitched together, creating new manifold geometry, eliminating the need to manually repair hidden faces or geometric data. Therefore, you can freely explore and modify polygonal mesh topology on your object.
Latest Updates:
- Smart Extrude now displays an icon above the manipulator in the Viewport when active, making it easier to distinguish from the Move tool manipulator.
- You can now access Smart Extrude in the poly modeling toolkit.
- There is now improved Manipulator and Pivot inheritance from the Move, Rotate and Scale tools
- Performance, reliability and stability of Smart Extrude operations has been improved upon.
To use Smart Extrude fast, you can now do one of the following:
- In the
Poly Modeling
Poly Modeling shelf, left-click
to activate a Smart Extrude operation when you have a component selection of faces in the Viewport.
- In the Modeling Toolkit, left-click Smart Extrude to activate the operation when you have a component selection of faces in the Viewport.
Note: By default, clicking the button in the
Poly Modeling shelf or the
Modeling Toolkit performs the smart extrude operation.
Tip: Assign a hotkey to any of the boolean commands to quickly perform a boolean operation without losing focus in the
Viewport. See
Assign a hotkey to a command.
