Solver Enhancements for 2018.2

Enhancements have been implemented to improve the performance of analysis solvers, and to provide you with better solutions.

Support for microcellular foaming in MPI2ABQ.vbs

MPI2ABQ.vbs is an existing Visual Basic script that is used to create 3D interface files for use in Abaqus. The script calls an internal executable solver to generate input files for a subsequent finite element structural analysis in Abaqus. The input files can include the model mesh and boundary conditions, material properties, and residual stress results from the polymer process.

For this release, this script and the underlying solver are extended to support the Thermoplastics Microcellular Injection Molding process. The material properties are calculated considering the effect of foam growth during the molding process; consequently, the material properties may be different from element to element. This feature is only supported for the following mesh type(s):

  • 3d icon 3D

Run this script from the Windows Command Line, or click Play Macro from the ribbon UI.

When you import the INP file into Abaqus, you see the following data:

  • the mesh
  • boundary conditions
  • initial stress
  • material data
  • user elemental orientation

This script is supported for all molding processes except:

  • Powder injection molding
  • Underfill encapsulation
  • RTM or SRIM

Compression molding result enhancements

The 3D solver for reactive and thermoplastics compression molding has been improved. As a result, fill patterns and other predictions are closer to actual results. In some cases, fill predictions are more realistic, with parts filling where previously a short shot was predicted. In addition, filling patterns have been improved, now showing smooth transitions.
