Export Mesh Model

To export a Mesh Model, use the Export Model option. This displays the Export dialog to specifically choose what to export into your onward workflow.

Note: Mesh models do not need to be loaded into view to perform an export. Only saved changes will be exported, so be sure to save before starting the process.
  1. Click Export Model to open the model exporting dialog. Unclassified Layers always merge into a single object during export.

  2. Use the Scene Selection drop down to choose a preset export scene.

    • Entire Mesh. Exports the entire mesh, including all classified and unclassified layers.
    • Classified Mesh. Exports the classified mesh layers only.
    • Custom. User-defined layers to include during export. Only selected layers will be exported.
    • Selected Geometries Only. Exports only the surfaces currently selected in the view. This is only available if surfaces are selected when the export window is opened.
  3. Click Merge Surface to specify if layers will export as individual objects or as single merged surfaces. Unclassified Layers are always merged into a single object during export.

Note: Merge Surfaces is useful for managing large file sizes and the efficiency of the model. It should always be used unless interaction with the mesh segmentation or classified mesh objects is needed.
  4. Under Export As, specify whether to export your model as a single file or Multiple files:

    • Single File. Places all selected layers into a single export file.
    • Multiple Files. Creates one file for each of the selected layers. Folders are created for each group.
  5. Click Browse to choose a save location.

  6. Set a unique file name as duplicate file names are not supported.

  7. Choose a mesh format from the drop down list to export it for other Autodesk (or 3rd party) software applications. ReCap meshes can be exported in a number of different formats, which can contain different information.

Format Has Texture Has Color Has Classification
    Collada (*.dae) Yes Yes No
    Filmbox (*.fbx) Yes Yes Yes
Graphic Language Transmission Format (*gltf / *glb) Yes Yes Yes
NavisWorks Cache (*.nwc) Yes Yes Yes
ReCap Revit Plugin Format (*.rcmr) No Yes Yes
Stereo Lithography (*.stl) No No No
Universal Scene Description (*.usd / *.usdz) Yes Yes Yes
    Wavefront (*.obj) Yes Yes Yes

Unclassified Layers are always merged into a single object during export.

  8. Specify Model Export settings depending on the file type chosen.

    • Texture. If present, choose to export the mesh with either No Texture, RGB Texture, or Intensity Texture.
      • For some file formats (such as Filmbox) you can choose to embed the texture in the export file. If this option is deselected, the texture will be created as a separate image file that accompanies the mesh file.
      • For some file formats, it is required to Flip Texture Y Axis to ensure that the end use application displays the mesh texture correctly.
    • Classification Color. Defines whether the classification color is applied to the mesh model on export. Color and Texture cannot both be applied to the same model. NavisWorks Cache is the exception in that it is able to store both styles
    • Up Axis. For some 3D mesh viewers, such as game engines, the axis that represents Up is different to others. Use this option to toggle the Up Axis between Z and Y.

  9. Click Export. Progress information will display at the bottom of the Mesh Editor interface.
