Core walls

The option is used to group panels (walls) in objects called core walls. It allows to obtain results for the core walls: reduced forces for each story. You can access the option using either method:

  • menu, by selecting the Geometry > Additional attributes > Core walls command
  • the toolbar, after pressing the icon.

Grouping walls into a core wall does not affect rigidity and the results for a building while the presence of the core wall does affect the calculation of the shear center (rigidity) for a story section. The core wall section is considered as a whole. The component of the shear center for the core wall is calculated from the thin-walled member theory.

Additional results can be obtained for the core walls, in form of the reduced forces and moments along the vertical axis of the gravity center of the core wall section. The results of the reduced forces for the core walls are available in form of tables (Results / Core walls) and diagrams (Results / Diagrams for buildings).

After selecting this option the following dialog displays.

You can specify the following parameters in the above dialog:

  • name of the created core wall
  • color in which the core wall will be presented.

In order to define which panels will build the defined core wall, follow the instructions:

  • indicate the number of panels which define the core wall in the Panel selection; it can be done in the following ways:

    - graphically, indicating the selected panels on the screen

    - textually, entering the panel number in the edit field

  • press Direction X to define the main X local axis direction for a core wall. Specify either:

    - According to global X axis

    - According to vector which projects to the XY plane

Note: You can also visualize the local coordinate system for core walls in your drawing. Use the View > Display option and select Local System of core walls under the Classic template.
  • press the Add button.

The defined core wall will be added to the list of defined core walls which is located in the bottom part of the dialog.

The defined core wall may be modified. After changing some of the core wall parameters (e.g. name of the core wall) and pressing the Modify button, the core wall parameters are modified in the list of modified core walls.

At the bottom of the dialog box there are the following buttons:

  • If the Delete button is pressed, then a selected (highlighted) core wall is deleted from the list of defined core walls.
  • If the Delete all button is pressed, all the core walls from the list of defined core walls are deleted.
