How to rotate viewports on sheets to avoid rotating dimensions in Revit

Technical Support

Issue:

How to rotate views in Revit (other than 90 degrees on a sheet) to avoid dimensions losing the correct orientation, such as for example turning upside down?

Causes:

Selecting a viewport on a sheet, Revit offers 3 options for rotating the viewport:
  • None
  • 90° clockwise
  • 90° counter-clockwise
Rotating the viewport however by selecting one of these options will rotate the viewport as if it was just an image, which might lead to wrong dimension orientations, making the plans hard to read.

Solution:

Use one of the following methods to rotate a view on a sheet with a custom angle, while allowing Revit to keep the correct dimension orientation:

Method 1

  1. Turn on the Crop region visibility (if it is not already visible).
  2. Select the Crop boundary, and then use the Rotate tool to rotate the crop.
Note: This method works for standard crop view, not section box.

Method 2

Modify the project’s True North: Rotate a View to True North (Help topic with video)

Note: This will affect any view that has its Orientation set to True North (and will change the True North orientation of the entire project).

Method 3

If the option "Rotation on plan" is active, use different types of dimensions for the rotated views:
1. Go to the dimension type Properties.
2. Duplicate the dimension type.
2. Change the 'Read Convention': for example from 'Up, then left' to 'Up, then right'.
