Create a Project Template

You can create a custom project template using several methods.

  1. On the Home page, under Models, click New.

As an alternative, from the ribbon, click File tabNew (Project).

  2. In the New Project dialog, under Template file, select:
    • None to create your template from a blank project file.
    • Browse to base your template on an existing project template. Navigate to the template location.
  3. Under Create new, select Project template.
  4. Click OK.
Note: If you do not base the template on an existing template, the Select Initial Units dialog displays. Specify Imperial or Metric units.
  5. Define settings.
  6. Create any geometry that will be used as a base in future projects.
  7. Click File tabSave.
  8. Enter a name and select a location for the template.
  9. Click Save.
  10. Add project templates to the template list for the New Project dialog.

Other methods include the following:

  • Open an existing template file, modify the settings as necessary, and save it as a new template (RTE) file.
  • Start with a blank model. Create and specify names for views, levels, schedules, and sheets. Create a construction documentation set by creating sheets and adding empty views to the sheets. Save the model as a template file. When you create a model using the template and start to draw geometry in the views, the views on the sheets update. This strategy automates the creation of construction documentation.
  • Start with a model that includes geometry that can be used as a base for new models. For example, if you have defined geometry for a college campus and want to include that geometry in multiple new models for the college, save the model with the geometry as a template. Each time you create a model using this template, the geometry is included.
