How Autodesk Assistant works

Autodesk Assistant uses artificial intelligence to understand your questions and provide helpful responses. This page explains how the Assistant works at a high level.

Note:

Autodesk Assistant capabilities vary by product. Some features described here may not be available in all Autodesk products. See your product's documentation for specific capabilities.

How the Assistant answers questions

When you ask the Assistant a question, it:

  1. Understands your request — The Assistant uses AI to interpret what you're asking, including context from your current session when available.
  2. Finds relevant information — The Assistant searches Autodesk help documentation and other authoritative sources to find answers.
  3. Generates a response — The Assistant creates a clear, conversational response based on what it found.

How the Assistant interacts with your work

Depending on your product, Autodesk Assistant can do more than just answer questions—it can take actions in your work, with your approval.

You are always in control. The Assistant only takes action when you ask it to or confirm its suggestions.

Querying your work: In some products, the Assistant can analyze your current model, design, or project to answer questions like "How many walls are in this view?" or "What materials are assigned to this component?"

Automating tasks: The Assistant can perform actions on your behalf, such as creating schedules, generating sheets, or selecting elements. To do this, the Assistant uses your product's tools and capabilities. You'll always confirm before the Assistant changes your work. It may look at your design or model automatically to answer your questions.

The specific actions available depend on your product. See your product's help documentation for details.

What the Assistant uses

The Assistant draws on Autodesk product documentation (help.autodesk.com) to answer your questions about products, features, and workflows.

In some products, the Assistant can also use:

  • Your current work — The model, design, or project you have open
  • Your product's capabilities — The tools and features available in your Autodesk software

The level of context available to the Assistant varies by product. In some products, the Assistant can see and analyze your current file. In others, it has limited or no visibility into your work. Check your product's documentation for specific capabilities.

The Assistant does not browse the internet by default. However, some products may enable an MCP tool that lets the Assistant connect to the internet.

MCP servers

Autodesk Assistant can connect to MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers to access additional tools and data sources. When the Assistant calls a tool from an MCP server, the tool name is shown in the conversation.

MCP servers are provided by Autodesk and run automatically in the background. They allow the Assistant to:

  • Access additional data — Retrieve information from Autodesk knowledge bases and services
  • Use product tools — Interact with product-specific capabilities for deeper automation, when available for your product
  • Connect to external sources — In some products, access additional data sources

The available MCP servers depend on your product and subscription. You don't need to configure or manage them.

About AI-generated responses

Autodesk Assistant uses generative AI to create responses. This means:

  • Responses are generated, not retrieved. The Assistant doesn't just look up pre-written answers—it creates responses based on its understanding of your question and available information.
  • Responses aim to be helpful and natural. The Assistant is designed to communicate clearly and conversationally.
  • Responses may not always be perfect. Like all AI systems, the Assistant can make mistakes. Always verify important information before acting on it.

For more on working effectively with AI, see AI limitations and best practices.

Supported languages

Autodesk Assistant is available in multiple languages. The Assistant's interface language matches your product language. For example, if you use Revit in French, the Assistant launches in French.

To change the Assistant's interface language, change the language setting in your Autodesk product.

Supported languages:

  • Chinese (Simplified, Traditional Taiwan, Traditional Hong Kong)
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English (US, UK)
  • Finnish
  • French (France, Canada)
  • German
  • Hungarian
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Norwegian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Portugal, Brazil)
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Swedish
  • Turkish

Response language: When you write a prompt in a specific language, the Assistant tries to respond in that language. However, response quality may vary for languages with limited support in the Assistant's knowledge sources.

Continuous improvement

Autodesk Assistant is constantly learning and improving based on user feedback. When you rate responses or add comments, you help make the Assistant better for everyone. The Assistant learns from this feedback, not from your customer data or project files.

The Assistant may also improve over time as Autodesk updates its AI models and expands its knowledge base.
