Open a Drawing File

You open drawings to work on them just as you do with other Windows applications. You can choose from several alternative methods.

To open a drawing, you can

  • In the upper-left corner of the application window, on the Quick Access toolbar (QAT), click the Open button .
  • From the Application menu , click Open.
  • Click Home tab Files panel Open.
  • Double-click a drawing in File Explorer to launch DWG TrueView and open the drawing.
  • Drag a drawing file from File Explorer or a folder into the DWG TrueView application window or onto the DWG TrueView shortcut icon.

You can open drawings that were saved as DWG or DXF files.

TrustedDWG™ Drawing Files

You can open DWG files that are created with Autodesk applications and RealDWG™-based applications (Trusted DWG files). When you open a TrustedDWG file, the following icon displays in the application status bar:

An alert box is displayed if:

  • The drawing file format is AutoCAD Release 14 or later and
  • The drawing file was not saved by an Autodesk application or RealDWG-based application.

Specify Search Paths and File Locations

You can set the search path to drawing support files such as text fonts, drawings, linetypes, and hatch patterns on the Files tab of the Options dialog box. You can open the Options dialog box by clicking Application menu Options.

Open Damaged Drawing Files

A drawing file is marked as damaged if corrupted data is detected. Opening the drawing will repair minor damage. If the damage is significant, you might be able to use the DWG Convert command to recover as much data as possible.

Procedures

To open a drawing

  1. Click Home tab Files panel Open.
  2. In the Select File dialog box, select one or more files and click Open.

    The icons on the left side of the dialog box provide quick access to commonly used files and file locations. To reorder the icons, drag them to a new location. To add or remove an icon, right-click the icon to display a shortcut menu.

To change a search path

  1. From the Application menu , click Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, Files tab, click the plus sign (+) to the left of the type of path you want to change.
  3. Select the path you want to change.
  4. Click Browse, and select the drive and directory you want to use.
  5. Click OK.
