Replace a configuration item

Requirements

To replace an item in its current cBOM context, you must first check out the parent item in order to maintain the relationship between the new child item and parent.

Replace a configuration item

  1. Open the assembly containing the item to be replaced in your CAD software.

  2. Refresh the cBOM view. Ensure the parent items of the item to be replaced are checked out.

  3. Right-click the item you want to replace and select Copy.

Cancel, Clone and Replace are displayed at the top.

  4. Select the item(s) you want to replace.

Tip: Right-click the top level box to select items by status.
  5. Click Replace.

Upchain begins to create copies of all selected components in your home folder.

  6. Refresh the cBOM view.

The copied item appears as 'Not Registered' with an orange icon next to it indicating a new item is about to be created.

  7. Right-click the parent item and select Check in (or Save).

The CAD Check in window opens and displays a green icon beside every item chosen to be copied. Upchain recognizes if the file you chose to replace contains configurations. However, only the configuration(s) being used in the parent assembly (and its linked configurations) will be registered to new items. You can see the names of the configurations in the Configuration Name column.

  8. In the CAD Check in window, click OK.

A new item is created for each configuration used in the parent assembly (and its configurations) and replaces the original item(s) in each eBOM it is used in. You can see the names of the used configurations in the Configuration Name column of the CAD Check in window.

To register additional configurations for the copied item, open the copied item on its own and check it in. The CAD Check in window displays all of its configurations and enables you to complete the copy process and register them to new items.

Tip: Check the copied item's Where used > Genealogy section to see from which item it was copied. Each copied configuration item will show the original configuration item it was copied from.
