Attach a document to an item

Requirements

The item must have a status of Development in order to attach documents to it.

Note: Tenant Administrators may attach a document to a Released or Released_External item. No one may attach a document to an item that has an Approval Pending status.

Attach a document

Upchain enables you to attach any additional documentation to an item to provide supporting information or reference material.

  1. In the project's BOM (bm-upchain-web-mceclip0-02.png) section, select the item for which you want to attach a document.

  2. Select more actions mceclip1.png > Import > Document.

    The Add Documents window opens.

  3. Click + Add Documents.

    A file browser opens.

  4. Locate the document to attach to the item and click Open.

  5. Wait for the document to finish uploading, then click OK.

Important: When you add a document to an item using this method, the document is always added to the item details pane > Documents tab > Documents > General documents. If you intended for the document to be uploaded to a different document category or folder, you should do so directly in the item's Documents tab.

You can see that an item contains supporting documents when the icon displayed under the Files column in the BOM table is black (bm-bom-icons-docs-attached-09).

Once the document is attached to an item you may be able to view it in the PDF Viewer if the file type is supported, and send the item to a Change request to release the item if needed.

Important: When the item is released or a new version of it is created, attached documents are assigned a new document number even if there are no changes made directly to the document.

For example, 10001-AB-ClampSpecifications.docx may become 10007-AB-ClampSpecifications.docx after the release process.

A document’s version number increments when subsequent documents with the same file name and file extension are attached to the same item.

Documents may be attached to items with edit, check out, or eBOM structural locks.
