Create a new version of an item in Upchain

An item at version zero (v0) always has a status of Released. A released item version cannot be modified and is considered finished. However, you may need to make further modifications to the item, such as changes to its attributes, CAD files, drawings, and/or documentation. To do this, you need to first create a new item version - v1. This new item version will have a status of Development and can be modified as needed. In the web application, you can make a new version of any item regardless of the item’s status. This allows you to create multiple versions, or “branches”, of the same item number. However, Autodesk does not recommend this as it may confuse your team when attempting to locate the latest versions of items. Instead, you may find it easier to create separate items and use the Linked items tab of the item details view.

Note: You cannot revise a released part or sub-assembly within the context of a released assembly without revising the assembly as well. This is because changes to the part or sub-assembly mean the assembly is changed as well.
Important: If a released item version exists in multiple locations, creating a new item version of it in one location does not update the item version in any other location. Instead, Upchain puts a warning symbol next to the original released item in the BOM tables in the Web application and the CAD plugin to indicate that a newer item version exists elsewhere. The exception is when the item is a child of a released parent item; no warning symbol is shown.
Tip: View the Where used tab in the item details pane in the Upchain web application BOM table and the Upchain CAD Plugin to see a list of all eBOMs and projects to which the released item belongs before revising an item to ensure you understand the impact you might make.

Requirements

The method you use to make a new item version depends on whether the item contains a CAD file or not:

  • If the item has a mechanical CAD file, you must create a new version from the Upchain CAD plugin if you want to retain the CAD model in the new version. Click here to learn more about creating a new version of a released item in the CAD plugin. Click here for a use case where you may want to make a new item version without its CAD.
  • If the item does not have a CAD file or is an Electrical package, you must create a new version of the item from the Upchain web application. Read through the topics below to learn how.
