Check out a document

If you want to make changes to a document, you need to check it out. When you have the file checked out, the file is locked to you and you can edit it on your local computer. When you are finished with the document, you must check it back in to commit your changes into Upchain so others can see your changes, or cancel the checkout to discard those changes and unlock the file.

To check out a file:

  1. Click the chevrons (chevron.png) beside the category and folders until you locate the document you want to check out.
  2. Beside this document, click more actions (action_menu.png).
  3. Select Checkout from the drop-down menu.

Upchain now prepares your document for checkout. Once it is finished, a writable copy of the document is downloaded to your local computer. You can then open the document in its native application and make your desired changes.

After a document is checked out, a lock icon appears next to its status to indicate that the document is now locked to you for changes. Other users also see the lock next to the document status. Hover your pointer over a lock to see the name of the user who has it checked out.

When you have a document locked, no one else can check it out until you check it back in , or cancel the checkout.

Note: For Microsoft Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), you may use the Upchain for Office plugin to manage document changes.
