Project Sync Administration

Administrators can configure synchronization settings between Vault and Autodesk cloud drives, and manage mappings.

Note: This feature is available only in Vault Professional. You also need to subscribe to BIM 360 Docs or Fusion Team to use Project Sync.

The Project Sync feature provides file and folder synchronization between Vault and supported Autodesk cloud drives. This capability enables Vault users to either automatically or manually synchronize files from a folder in Vault with a folder in a cloud drive. The synchronization can be configured to work in either direction or both directions providing simple and reliable two-way communications between project team members.

The Project Sync utility can be configured to perform synchronization in ways that best suit your needs. A synchronization can occur at a scheduled time each day, at specific time intervals, or on demand. Use the filter options to have even more control over which files are uploaded.

Bi-Directional Sync

If bi-directional sync is defined for a cloud drive mapping, any changes to the data in the vault are updated to the cloud drive first. After changes have been updated from Vault to the cloud drive, any remaining changes on the cloud drive are updated to Vault.

Supported Cloud Drives

To access the BIM 360 Docs or Fusion 360 drive, you must install Desktop Connector.

Important: Using the BIM 360 Docs with Project Sync, we are unable to support the following applications:
  • Inventor references/relationship
  • Revit references/relationship
  • Microstation references/relationship

Enable the Job Server

Since the Project Sync functionality depends on the Vault Job Processor to pull jobs from the Job Server queue, make sure that the Job Server is enabled.

You must be an administrator in Vault to enable the Job Server.

Vault Support for Desktop Connector 16.x

Vault now supports Desktop Connector version 16.4 and higher.

Desktop Connector version 16.x introduces many exciting new capabilities. There are some key differences when compared to 15.x versions that should be considered before choosing to install, learn more by referring to Desktop Connector 16.x FAQ.

Using Desktop Connector v16.4+ with Vault

If you have previously configured Vault Sync with Desktop Connector v15.x or earlier and plan to upgrade to Desktop Connector v16.x, you will need to take action to avoid disruptions in syncing.

The default workspace location has been changed to “C:\users\USERPROFILE\DC” with Desktop Connector v16.x. This change could cause the Job Processor to error on Project Synchronization jobs. An error may also be shown when opening the Project Sync configuration dialog.

To avoid these errors after installing Desktop Connector 16.x, edit all Cloud Drive mappings (Docs & Fusion) in the Vault Client.

  1. Go to Tools > Administration > Vault Settings > Collaborate > Configure.
  2. Select a mapping and choose “Edit”.
  3. Update the “Cloud Drive folder” to point to the new workspace location. This may automatically get updated upon editing, be sure to click Ok when exiting the dialog.
Important: If you are using multiple Job Processors, all Job Processor machines should be on the same version of Desktop Connector.

Known Issues or Limitations

  • Inventor workflows with Autodesk Docs require creating a project file using the Desktop Connector’s workspace location. This is only required for those users not using Vault and a Vault Inventor Project file.
  • If you are syncing Autodesk Inventor 2024 data, you will need to upgrade to Desktop Connector 16.x. Desktop Connector 15.x does not provide reference support for Autodesk Inventor 2024.
