Copy Design Walkthrough

This topics walks you through a typical copy design workflow using the Copy Design stand-alone application.

  1. In the Vault client, right-click on the file you want to copy and select Copy Design.

    Note: If you start Copy Design from the main file grid, it will get the latest of all files by default. This is the same as the Get behavior. However, starting Copy Design from the Uses tab is revision specific. If you want to copy a particular version of a file, right-click on the version from the History tab and select Copy Design.

    The Copy Design dialog opens.

    Note: If dependent files are cloaked, the following message displays: "Some of the children of the added object are inaccessible." An administrator must provide access to the dependent files. After obtaining access, refresh the Copy Design main view.
  2. Click Add Files from the File menu on the toolbar to add additional files for copying. Select the files that you want to copy and click Open.

    Important: AutoCAD Electrical users should select the electrical project (WDP) and not just the drawings. In addition, all project support files (WDT, WDL, AEPX) should have the same name as the project file.

    The files are added to the main view of the Copy Design dialog.

  3. In the toolbar, click Actions, and select the desired operation for the files listed in the main view.

  4. If you want to perform a different action on a file, right-click on the file and select the action from the context menu. If you want to edit the key user-defined properties during the copying process, click the property value to edit.

    Tip: Click Refresh at any time to capture the latest version of the listed files and file structure.
  5. To select the rule set that you want to apply to the copy operation, click Options > Action Rules, and select a desired rule from the list. Or, click Define to define a new action rule.

  6. Once everything is configured, click Execute Copy on the toolbar to start the copy operation.

    Several pre-checks are performed to ensure that:

    • All files have unique names (by Folder)
    • Vault unique file name rules are met
    • Selected files still exist
    • Files requiring edits are write-enabled
    • Files requiring edits are owned by the workgroup site
Note: When copying files with the same name into the same folder, and auto renaming is selected, the prefix "Copy of" is added to the first copy without a suffix, and all subsequent copies have that prefix followed by the suffix "(2)", "(3)", etc.

All successful copy operations receive a green check in the main view. If a copy operation failed, a red cross is displayed.

During a copy operation, if there are any files with restrictions, a warning dialog displays a list of restricted files highlighted in red. Hover over the red cross icon on each highlighted row to view the warning detail. You can export the restricted file list to an external file (xls, xlsx, txt, htm, html) for reference.

To perform another copy operation, modify your settings and click Execute Copy.
