Live Reference Enhancements (2026.2)
With Live Reference, Alias environments, curves, and variant data can now be brought into VRED. Like with other live referenced content, when either of these is modified in Alias, the VRED user will be notified.
Light Attenuation
With Live References, an Alias user can now export their light decay attribute, VRED will convert it to Attenuation in the Light Editor, and updates will be available in VRED whenever changes are made in Alias.
NURBS Curves
Now, modifications to curves and layer colors in Alias are supported via Live Referencing. A VRED user can live reference NURBS curves from Alias to VRED polylines. Editing of these curves in Alias are synced. The layer color for curves is synced through live referencing. When curves are sent to VRED, then the layer color is changed, this is updated in VRED.
Curves from cross-sections are not included in Live Reference data.
Variant Data
Now, a VRED user can live reference variant data from Alias. The naming convention and the hierarchy of the variant preview image, visibility state, material updates for material switches through variant switching, and camera views from Alias are brought into VRED. Invisible layers and object must be enabled in Alias for the visibility feature to work. Only Alias enabled variant states are transferred.
In Alias, enable the Variant filter in the Live Reference options. The variants become Variant Sets in VRED and include the camera view and active environment. Notice that the variant's active environment becomes the default in VRED.
Environments
Now, a VRED user can live reference environments from Alias, enabling VRED to use the same environment. When VRED pulls in one or more environments from a Live Reference, synchronizing with Alias, an environment switch is created in VRED, containing these environments.

Work with your VRED environment, switch to the Live Reference environment in Alias, or select another from the Live Reference environment switch. Whenever a live referenced environment is modified in Alias, the VRED user will receive an update.
Limitations: The Alias version of the VRED Skylight environment is not supported for Live References.
In Alias, enable the Environment filter in the Live Reference options. The environment, including .hdr images, are display in VRED without need of modification. If the Live Reference contains multiple environments, the active environment in Alias displays by default. As mentioned above, you can switch to a different environment in VRED by selecting another from the Live Reference environment switch.
