Convert a design's type

Learn how to convert the design's type to Part, Assembly, or Hybrid in Fusion.

  1. Open or create a design.

  2. In the Browser, expand Document Settings.

  3. Locate and hover the cursor over Design Type.

  4. Click Convert Design Type edit pencil icon.

The Convert Design Type dialog displays.

  5. Expand the list and select a type:

    • Part Design part design icon: A single component to manufacture or use in an assembly. Best for designs that will be inserted and reused in assemblies. Note: You can convert an Assembly or Hybrid Design to a Part design as long as it does not contain any child components.
    • Assembly Design assembly design icon: A design where you can create and insert components to create an assembly. Best for designs that primarily involve positioning and defining relationships between components in an assembly.
    • Hybrid Design hybrid design icon: A design that combines part design and assembly capabilities with access to all design toolbars including Solid, Surface, Mesh, Sheet Metal, Plastic, Assembly, Manage, and Utilities. Best for conceptual designs that require both modeling and assembly workflows.
  6. Click OK.

The design's type updates and the available toolbars display to match the selected design type.

Note:

A Part design can be converted to an Assembly or Hybrid design at any time. If the Part design contains geometry like sketches or bodies, they will remain in the default component after it's converted. If an design is an Assembly or Hybrid design and the design contains child components, it can't be converted to a Part because a part design is a singular component that can't contain components.

Tips

  • For a classic Fusion experience, use Hybrid design type.
