Retract and Approach in X direction for turning operations

Generally, when machining on the inside diameter of the part, the tool approaches the first cut from the clearance plane and then moves to the clearance plane after the last cut to retract out of the part.

Approaching from and retracting to the clearance plane

It can be more efficient to approach from the first cut and retract from the last cut instead of moving from or to the clearance plane as this requires more tool travel:
