Automatically constrain and dimension your sketch
Run the tool
Create a new sketch and add sketch geometry or activate an existing sketch with sketch geometry.
In the Constraints panel, click AutoConstrain
.The AutoConstrain dialog displays and starts generating results. After the tool runs, the first result is selected by default and the suggested constraints and dimensions are shown on the canvas in purple.
Click different results to review them.
Optionally, use the slider to adjust the number of added constraints and dimensions:
- Reduce Constraints: Decreases the number of added constraints and dimensions.
- Add Constraints: Increases the number of added constraints and dimensions.
Optionally, check the Modify Geometry box to modify sketch geometry within various tolerances that you specify using the Tolerance slider and custom settings.
Optionally, click Generate more to generate more result options to choose from.
Optionally, to delete a constraint or dimension, select it in the canvas and press Delete.
The Result tile displays a Refresh button. Click Refresh to regenerate the results without the deleted dimension.
Select and customize the result that best suits your needs.
Click OK.
The sketch updates in the canvas automatically with the added constraints and dimensions.
Set the datum from a result tile
Set a datum in your sketch to help drive the consistency and accuracy of your design. You can set a datum from a result tile or you can select a point in your sketch first and run the tool using the selected point as the datum.
Click Sketch > Automate > AutoConstrain
to generate results.Select a result tile and click More
> Set datum. In the canvas, select a point in your sketch to place the datum.
The result preview in the canvas updates with the dimensions aligned to the new datum.
Review the results and select the one that best suits your needs. Click OK to add the constraints and dimensions to your sketch.
The sketch updates in the canvas automatically with the added constraints and dimensions.
Tips
- For best results, add some initial constraints and dimensions to your sketch, then run the tool.
- To place the datum quickly and then calculate results in one click, use AutoConstrain From Datum.
