Exercise 5: Import Tree Points

Use properties to style the trees according to their species.

Trees are stored as points, with one point for each tree. If you use an identifying property for the Rule Style (for example, species), each point is styled according to that property.

To import tree data

  1. On the Data Sources panel, click (Add File Data Source).
  2. Click the file type for your tree file, such as SHP.
  3. Navigate to the file containing tree data and open it.
  4. On the Data Sources panel, double-click the new entry to configure it.
  5. Set the Type to Trees.
  6. Map any other properties that the original source file contains.

For example, map a property like Species from your original data store to the Name property.

  7. To map the Species property to a style rule, select Species from the Rule Style drop-down list.
  8. On the Source tab, set the Draping Options to Drape and click OK.
  9. Click Close & Refresh.
