Lesson 1: Create a Model and Import Data

Start from scratch to model your area of interest.

In this lesson, you create a new model from the Start page. You specify the name and coordinate system for the model. Optionally, you can specify extents to limit the model size.

You import real-world data to model your area of interest. Data that uses a different coordinate system is transformed to use the model's coordinate system. You map the data attributes of the original data to the attributes of the model schema to make that data available to the model.

Note: Optionally, you can use the Model Builder (preview) to bring in USGS elevation data, USDA aerial imagery data, and OpenStreetMap's Highway, Railway and building datasets to create high quality models.
  1. Exercise 1: Create the Model
    Create a new model from the Start page.
  2. Exercise 2: Import Terrain
    Add a contour file and drape coverages on it.
  3. Exercise 3: Import Roads
  4. Exercise 4: Import Buildings
    Import building footprints. Use properties to determine building height and style.
  5. Exercise 5: Import Tree Points
    Use properties to style the trees according to their species.
