Installation Stalls when Preparing Revit Content

Symptom or Message: When you are installing Revit and the progress bar displays the message Preparing Revit Content, the installation process appears to freeze or hang.

Issue: This issue can occur when you are installing Revit using the downloaded version from the subscription center, instead of installing from media, like a DVD. With the downloaded version, you need an Internet connection to install the Revit content. (The DVD version has the content on the media itself.)

The Revit installation process may appear to be halted when content cabinets are downloaded from the Internet. The length of the delay varies with available bandwidth and the amount of requested content. Please allow time for this process to complete.

If the msiexec.exe process is aborted, the Revit installation needs to be restarted.

If you disconnect your Internet connection when you encounter this issue, the installation process continues, but it skips the Revit content. Without the content, you may encounter other issues, errors, and warnings when you start the Revit software.

Solution: To ensure that the content download is not being blocked and causing the installation process to hang, verify that Autodesk.com is one of your Trusted Sites:

  1. Open the Internet Options dialog, and click the Security tab.
  2. Select Trusted sites, and click the Sites button.
  3. In the Trusted Sites dialog, for Add this website to the zone, enter *autodesk.com, and click Add.
  4. Close the dialog, and click OK to apply changes.
  5. Start the installation again.
