Maximize your skill using Direct Manipulation to interact with models.

Direct Manipulation is a new user interface where you interact and modify a model while viewing the changes in real time. The resulting interaction is dynamic, visual, and predictable. You focus on the geometry in an in-canvas display instead of interacting with user interface elements such as the ribbon, browser, and a dialog box.

Objectives

  • Identify the various graphical elements of the Direct Manipulation in-canvas display.
  • Rotate and extrude sketch profiles using manipulators.
  • Offset a work plane using a distance arrow.
  • Create a sketch using the mini-toolbar.
  • Use the Dynamic Input Heads-Up Display (HUD) to construct accurate sketch geometry and have it automatically dimensioned.
  • Recognize the differences between Join, Cut, and Intersect graphical previews.
  • Create an edge fillet.
  • Construct a tapped hole.
  • Rotate an existing face.

Prerequisites

  • Know how to set the active project and navigate model space with the various viewing tools.
  • See the Help topics "Getting Started", "Direct Manipulation", and “Dynamic Input” for further information.

System Settings

On the ribbon Tools tab, Options panel, select Application Options and click the Sketch tab to enable the following settings:

  • Edit dimension when created
  • Autoproject edges for sketch creation and edit
Note: The Grid lines display is not enabled in any of the sketch environment images in this tutorial.
