Intent Files, Libraries, and Profiles

Intent design files

In Intent, designs are stored in simple (Unicode) text files. Design source files have an .iks extension. By default, iks files are saved in the same folder as the Drawing (dwg) file.

In Intent, you can specify the search path to Intent design files. You can set and store named and ordered collections of search paths, known as Design Collections.

Settings for design files are located in the AutoCAD Options dialog box, Intent tab. There you can add, delete, and reorder search paths, and activate design collections.

When Intent is initialized for the first time, the default design collection name is My Designs. The default search path is different for different operating systems.
  • In Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Autodesk\Intent\My Designs
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\Roaming\Autodesk\Intent\My Designs

Intent libraries

The AutoCAD library contains the system design and function definitions that are used in AutoCAD. Additional libraries are supplied for ODBC, Microsoft Office, and other purposes.

Intent profiles

Profiles store drawing environment settings. Intent for AutoCAD provides a default Intent profile. The profile is invoked when you start AutoCAD from the AutoCAD 2013 Intent shortcut. You can define additional profiles for different users or projects. Refer to Save and Restore Interface Settings (Profiles) in the AutoCAD User’s Guide for more information about working with profiles.

Profile settings are located in the Options dialog box, Profiles tab.
