Preliminary configuration (tutorial)

In this tutorial you will learn how to import a model, orient it correctly in the mold and run several preliminary analyses.

A project might require you to run analyses using several variations and combinations of process settings, injection locations, cooling configurations, etc. before reaching the optimal solution. To efficiently manage this process, you can save copies of a study at various points in the analysis process. These copies can be used as a starting point when testing different settings and variations of the same model.

This tutorial is the basis for the Single cavity and Multi-cavity tutorials. At the end of this tutorial, you will have a study that is used in future tutorials.

This tutorial takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Note: Throughout this tutorial it is assumed that metric units are used.
To change units:
  1. Select Application button > Options.
  2. Select the General tab.
  3. Select Metric units from the Active units drop-down menu.
  4. Click OK.
  1. Importing the model
    In this task you will import an existing CAD model into a new project, and then orient the model correctly within the mold.
  2. Design Adviser analysis
    In this task, you will use the Design Adviser analysis to check for areas of the part that are likely to cause problems during other analyses, or that would significantly increase analysis time.
  3. Setting the injection location
    In this task you will learn how to choose and set a suitable injection location, using the Gate Location analysis to suggest appropriate injection locations based on the geometry of the part.
  4. Molding window
    In this task you will use the Molding Window analysis to check how the injection location, material and processing conditions will affect the final product.
  5. Defining parting planes
    In this task you will add a parting plane to the model to indicate where the mold separates when it is opened.

    In this tutorial, you have learned how to specify analysis parameters by using Geometry, Gate Location and Molding Window analyses to find optimal analysis parameters.
