Exporting to DWG or DXF

  1. Click ExportCAD Formats (DWG) or (DXF).
  2. In the DWG (or DXF) Export dialog, if the desired setup is not listed under Select Export Setup, select a different one from the drop-down list. To modify the selected setup or create a new one, click (Modify Export Setup); otherwise, skip to step 4.
The left panel of the Modify DWG/DXF Export Setup dialog lists all existing export setups. Settings for the currently selected setup display on the tabs. Use the following controls to manage setups:
New Export Setup. Uses default settings.
Duplicate Export Setup. Creates new setup using settings from the currently selected setup.
Rename Export Setup. Prompts you to specify new name for currently selected setup.
Delete Export Setup. Deletes the selected setups (except for the default <in session export setup> which cannot be deleted).
  3. In the Modify DWG/DXF Export Setup dialog, specify export options on the following tabs as needed, and then click OK.
  4. In the DWG (or DXF) Export Settings dialog, specify which views and sheets to export to the DWG or DXF file.
If you want to export… Then…
    a single view for Export, select <Current View/Sheet Only>.
multiple views and sheets for Export, select <In session view/sheet set>, and then select the views and sheets to export (see About Creating View and Sheet Sets).
  5. If you are ready to export, click Next. (Or click Save Set & Close to save the current export settings and close the dialog without exporting.)
  6. In the Export CAD Formats dialog, navigate to the target folder for the exported files.
  7. For Files of type, select an AutoCAD version for the exported DWG/DXF file. (The default setting for this option is specified on the General tab of the Modify DWG/DXF Export Setup dialog referenced in step 3.)
Note: When the selected option is AutoCAD 2000 DWG Files (*.dwg) or AutoCAD 2000 DXF Files (*.dxf), layer names are limited to 32 characters. Revit automatically truncates longer names, retaining the first 15 characters and the last 15 characters, separated by an underbar character (_) and suffixed with a unique numeric character.
  8. For Naming, select an option for the automatically generated file name.
  9. If you want any Revit or DWG links in the project to be exported to a single file rather than to several files that reference each other, make sure the Export views on sheets and links as external references option is cleared. (The default setting for this option is specified on the General tab of the Modify DWG/DXF Export Setup dialog referenced in step 3.)
  10. Click OK.

Revit exports the selected views and sheets to DWG files and places them in the target folder.

When you export a 3D view to a DWG or DXF file, colors are treated as follows:

When you export a 2D view to a DWG file, lines are treated as follows:

Note: If you selected to export a Revit file to DWG that has an image inserted as a background image on a sheet view, you may need to edit the Plot Options in the exported DWG file in order to get the image to be displayed correctly in AutoCAD. To do this, launch the AutoCAD Page Setup Manager and clear "Plot Paper Space Last."
