Tutorial 1 - Create an MSC Nastran Bulk Data File for use with Simulation Composite Analysis

Walk through a demonstration of the ply-based material functionality in Simulation Composite Analysis. The primary emphasis is creation of MSC Nastran bulk data files that are compatible with the software and viewing of special solution variables computed by the tool. Tutorial 1 uses Patran to import the geometry and build the bulk data file.

Introduction
Create the Part
A pre-defined mesh for the coupon is imported and will be used as the foundation for the model.
Characterize a User Material with Composite Material Manager
A unique material characterization must be performed for each material used with Simulation Composite Analysis.
Create a Temporary Material
In this step we create a temporary material to act as a placeholder for our user-defined composite material.
Define a Composite Layup
After the part and material have been created, a composite layup section is created.
Apply Boundary Conditions
Create boundary conditions that minimally constrain the movement of the bottom surface of the coupon.
Define the Load
An additonal boundary condition is created to impose a vertical displacement along the top surface of the coupon.
Prepare the Analysis
Define a load step, modify nonlinear solution controls, and add the commands necessary for use with Simulation Composite Analysis.
Define a User Material
Now that we have characterized the user material with Composite Material Manager we can define it in the bulk data file.
Complete the Bulk Data File
Before the analysis is completed, we must remove some of the unnecessary entries in the bulk data file and modify the SUBCASE.
Submit for Analysis
Use the command shell to submit the bulk data file for analysis.
View and Interpret Results
In the steps that follow you will interpret the results of the analysis.
Summary
Simulation Composite Analysis was used to predict progressive fiber and matrix failure caused by a displacement controlled load.
