You can prevent objects on specified layers from being selected and modified by locking those layers.
When a layer is locked, none of the objects on that layer can be modified until you unlock the layer. Locking layers reduces the possibility of modifying objects accidentally.
Objects on locked layers appear faded and a small lock icon is displayed when you hover over an object on a locked layer. You can set a fade level to locked layers. This serves two purposes:

The LAYLOCKFADECTL system variable controls the fading applied to locked layers.
When you lock a layer that contains transparent objects, the visibility of those objects is further reduced by the specified locked layer fading value.
