Synchronization

Here is the download for our recommended way of synchronizing the shared database down to a local install (creating a Copy of for mobile use).

There are many tools available but in this example, we will discuss how to use the free download from Microsoft called SyncToy.

You will need the x86 version if you are running 32bit Operating system or the x64 for 64bit systems. Once installed and is ran for the first time, there is a need to configure the synchronizing tool and path all the relevant directories from the server, that need to be created locally. The directories being created are needed to be setup in Echo mode so it copies down from the server to you local PC.

Important note: There are alternative options here for example a full sync which works off the modified date to determine which way the file(s) are copied (Not recommended). Please ensure you create a backup of the network installation prior to completing the synchronization for the first time.

When the SyncToy application has opened, the Left folder view is the server location, the right folder view is the destination folder (local drive).

You will need to setup syncs (Echo mode) for each folder of the installation.

You can run the editmap.exe program from the root of the installation to help you locate the folders required and where they are currently pointing to. In certain instances, exclusions are to be made for the map.ini file contained in the installation folder as this could have references to network paths if not containing relative paths. In this case a copy of the map.ini is made initially and then manually configured on the local system so only reads relative to the copied folders (i.e. '../Shared/Database' rather than 'Z:/MAP-Software/Shared/Database' ).

A local folder is required to be created C:\MAP-Software\* for example and this directory is now to be used for the server structure to echo into when the SyncToy is run. (May take several minutes on first run).

Please discuss with your supplier if you are not sure as this can have severe impact if done incorrectly and no backup has been completed.
