Using AutoCAD Utility Design

This topic provides a high level workflow with links to the component tasks for more detailed instructions.

1. Create a New Design

Create and name a new design drawing, set the coordinate system, and define document properties. See To Create a New Design.

2. Add Base Map Data and Convert Drawing Data to Design Data

Connect to base map data or attach xref drawings. Convert incoming source data to industry model design features as needed. See About Adding Data.

3. Create the Layout

Use the drawing tools to create design features. Perform design validation and address issues as you work. See About Design Layout.

4. Validate the Design

As you design the layout, Utility Design runs validations rules against new and changed features. See About Design Validation.

5. Perform Analysis

Run analysis operations as needed. Analysis tools are voltage drop (radial and meshed), sag calculation (overhead engineering), pulling tension calculation, load calculation, and guy analysis.

6. Generate Material List

When the design is complete, generate a list of materials by work location. See About Material Lists.

7. Publish Design

You can use the Map 3D Report Designer to create a variety of reports. Use the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager to publish design drawings. See To Export, Create Reports, and Publish Your Design.
