Attaching Point Clouds

Before a point cloud can be used by AutoCAD, the scan file from which it was derived must first be indexed. This is accomplished using the Autodesk ReCap command. After indexing the file in Autodesk ReCap, use the Attach command to place, orient, or scale the point cloud in the AutoCAD graphics window.

  1. Click Attach in the Point Cloud area of the Factory tab.
  2. Navigate to the folder than contains the indexed file (.rcs or .rcp) you wish to attach. Select the file and click Open.
  3. Enter insertion point, scale, and rotation information:

Insertion point: the location where the base point of the point cloud is attached to the current drawing. Specify on-screen: specifies the insertion point in the target drawing at the time of insertion. X, Y, Z: are the insertion point coordinate values.

Scale: the scale factor for the inserted point cloud. For example, enter 0.5 to attach the point cloud at one-half scale. Select Specify on-screen to show the relative scale of the point cloud as you attach it to the drawing.

Rotation: the rotation angle of the inserted point cloud. Select Specify on-screen to indicate the angle using the pointing device.

Use geographic location: place the point cloud on the drawing using geographic data. The drawing file and the point cloud must both contain geolocation data and use the same coordinate system.

Lock point cloud: prevents moving or rotating the attached point cloud.

Zoom to point cloud: automatically zooms to the extents of point cloud upon placement.

Show Details: click to see additional information about the point cloud, such as size, intensity, and colors.

  4. Click OK.
