Roads Tutorial 2 Exercise 3: Grading Along the Road

In this exercise, you will learn how to do some preliminary grading design. You will also get some practice analyzing the terrain to see the slopes.

  1. Go to the bookmark Road Passing Lane 3.
  2. Select the road.
  3. On the asset card, change the Edit Mode to Roadside Grading.

    The blue lines indicate the grading width (10m by default).

  4. Change the Grading Method from Fixed Width to Fixed Slope.
  5. Note the vertical surface that appears when you select this method.
  6. Open the Terrain Themes panel.
  7. Click the "+" sign to start a new terrain theme.
  8. For Analysis Type, select Slope.
  9. Move the Transparency slider to about half way.
  10. Click OK to create the theme.
  11. Note the excessive slope where the vertical surface appears.

    Red shows the lowest values and blue the highest in this analysis.

  12. Change the Grading Method to Fixed Width.
  13. Note that the slope is now an acceptable value.
  14. Deselect the terrain theme to turn off visibility.
  15. Close the Terrain Themes panel.
  16. On the asset card, change the Edit Mode to Geometry.
