Roads Tutorial 6 Exercise 3: Optimizing a Road Profile (Vertical Optimization)

In this final tutorial exercise, you will optimize the profile for a design road. This is also called vertical optimization.

  1. Switch to the proposal RoadsTutorial.

  2. Go to the bookmark Sight distance 2.
  3. Select the road.
  4. Close the asset card for the road.
  5. Open the Roads Analysis toolbar and select Profile Optimization.
  6. Click Advanced Settings.

Note that there is a yellow warning triangle.

  7. Mouse over the yellow triangle to view the warning message.

There is a duplicate PVI that is not needed.

  8. In the list of Anchored PVIs, deselect the second one (Station = 0.02).
  9. Click Profile View.
  10. Zoom into the profile so that you can see the difference between the green line (existing surface) and black line (proposed road profile).
  11. Close the Profile View.
  12. Scroll down in Advanced Settings, then click Quantities Options.
  13. Note the option here to locate a borrow or waste pit in the model.
  14. Repeat for the other settings tabs: Construction Rules and Construction and Earthwork Cost.
  15. Close Advanced Settings.

Normally, you would then click Optimize It to start the job. However, Profile Optimization is a paid service, so you will want to keep those cloud credits for your own optimizations. The process is just the same as for Corridor Optimization. You will be notified by email when the job is complete and you can then view the report. Below is a link to a copy of the report for the road in this exercise, in case you want to see what data is included.
