Layer ribbon commands

Layer ribbon commands are used to create, delete, and display layers and assign elements to them.

Work with layers using these controls.

Icon Command Action
New Layer Creates a new layer. Once created, right-click on the name to change it.
Activate Layer Makes the highlighted layer active. The layer name becomes bold.
Tip: Make sure the appropriate layer is active before you create new geometry or mesh entities. New entities automatically become part of the active layer.
Delete Layer

Deletes the highlighted layer. If there are any entities on that layer, you will be prompted either to delete the entities or to move them to the active layer. You cannot delete the active layer, or all layers.

Note: Although components of an assembly are assigned to different layers, deleting a layer that contains CAD components of an assembly will result in the deletion of the whole assembly.
Layer Display Allows you to view, and edit, the color and display methods of the entities on the highlighted layer. You can also hide/show entity labels, for example element or node numbers.
Assign Layer Assigns the selected entities in the display window to the highlighted layer.
Expand Layer Assigns adjoining entities to the selected layer according to a user-specified number of levels. If there is only one element on a layer and the expand command is used, all of the elements attached to the single element are added to this layer, as well as all of the nodes on the elements.

The expanded elements can also be moved to a new layer, so there is a layer for the original elements to be expanded and the layer containing the expanded entities.

Note: This operation does not apply to CAD entities.
Clean Layer Deletes all layers that have no entities associated with them.
